Jerry Falwell - Religious Right or Wrong? Moral Majority or Hypocrisy?
The Rev. Jerry Falwell died on May 15, 2007. He prophetically preached against homosexuality, lesbianism, perversion, and abortion. He wholeheartedly believed these sins caused God to remove His hand of protection from America. Hence Falwell said the people trying to usher in alternative lifestyles in America, including the ACLU and American Way, helped bring about the fatal attacks on 9/11.
Falwell's form of faith and fury scared the devil out of many politicians showing them the raw political power of God-fearing people. Falwell helped mobilize conservatives to vote helping Ronald Reagan get elected for President and defeat born-again Christian Jimmy Carter. Preferring to focus on sexual orientation rather than the immorality of the heavily Republican military industrial complex and misuse of secret services overseas, Falwell carved out for himself a religious and political niche that challenged and changed American politics.
Falwell was loved and hated; respected and reviled; compassionate and controversial. One thing is unmistakeable about the Rev. Jerry Falwell. He stirred the hearts and conscience of America and made us think.
Falwell's mobilization of fundamentalists and conservative Christians was monumental. He compelled apathetic God-fearing individuals to take interest in civic and political matters. Rev. Falwell lobbied and applied pressure to the courts to rectify injustices against the innocent. He fought for equal freedoms for Christian schools when the federal treasury sought to scrutinize education during the Carter administration.
Concerning the gay & lesbian community, Falwell was outspoken and apologetic. When he become excessively antagonistic and verbose, he in humility apologized. Nevertheless he as a statesman and ambassador for Christ upheld his moral convictions and divine duty to be a voice to the conscience of America.
Rev. Falwell built a church out of 35 members into a 22,000 Christian coalition, a congregation that served as the foundational platform for his national TV broadcast to impact the nation. In 1979, he formed the Moral Majority which spearheaded religious activism in America and turned the political tide against the overt acceptance of immorality and ungodliness.
Jerry loved people and hated the sin in which they were entangled and sinking. By doing so he both loved, liberated, and uplifted us all.
